The Waterloo Record: Local company supplying hand sanitizer to Kitchener hospital after learning of shortages.
In response to an article appearing in the Waterloo Region Record last week, which detailed the global supply shortages of pharmaceutical-grade ethanol, we began supplying hospitals in our community with the Kalaya Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer with Hyaluronic Acid. Read a summary of the article below.
After being made aware of the shortage local hospitals were facing, we sent our first shipment of the Kalaya Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer with Hyaluronic Acid to Grand River Hospital last week.
“It’s kudos to the Record,” said Juston Sharratt, a partner at Avaria Health & Beauty Corp., the owners of Kalaya. “Internally we had seen the article as it relates to the issue all three hospitals in the region are facing, and as a local company, our first step was to reach out to all three of the sites just to see if we can help.”
Hospitals in the region have been able to temporarily delay the use of hand sanitizers that contain technical-grade ethanol, relying on new suppliers, like Avaria Health & Beauty Corp. to fill the void. Learn more about the Waterloo Regional Record’s reporting on technical-grade ethanol here.
Grand River Hospital, which had distributed some sanitizer with technical-grade ethanol for use in the hospital, has since decided to remove it from its floors. The hospital will now be using the Kalaya Antiseptic Hand Sanitizer, which uses Hyaluronic Acid, a substance often found in anti-aging products to help prevent skin dryness and promote hydration of the skin.
“It’s addressing a real problem where people who are in this new routine of handwashing multiple times a day and sanitizing multiple times a day are having issues with skin dryness,” said Sharratt.
The product also checks another critically important box for hospitals: it uses USP-grade (United States Pharmacopeia) ethanol, not technical-grade. Our 15-year background supplying health and wellness products has led to strong connections with suppliers, so we’ve been able to procure USP-grade ethanol domestically.
